A MYSTERY explosion that shattered the windows of an Islington townhouse and sprayed debris as far as 40 metres was detonated in the kitchen of the two-storey building, Newcastle police said yesterday.
Acting Inspector Craig Reid said forensic experts had confirmed the explosion originated from a homemade bomb.It was detonated about 4am on Friday. The force was so strong it buckled the aluminium window frames and ripped open the first-floor ceiling.A number of exhibits taken from the Maitland Road townhouse are in Sydney being tested by an explosives expert.Police did not know yesterday what materials were used to make the bomb, however it appeared a timer was not used.Acting Inspector Reid said police could not confirm a link between the explosion and a similar one that rocked a Cameron Park home that was being constructed by Valley Homes. The Cameron Park explosion detonated about 3am on Tuesday.Valley Homes director Craig Baumann told The Herald on Tuesday it destroyed most of the windows and the internal linings.Police said yesterday the internal ceiling had been sucked in by the explosion.Engineers would examine the home to determine the extent of the damage.Anyone with information about the explosions is asked to contact police.Information about the Islington explosion should be forwarded to Newcastle police on 4929 0999 and information about the Cameron Park explosion to Lake Macquarie police on 4942 9999.
