DESIRE for revenge on another man for taking up with his ex-girlfriend led Daniel Fing to plant a homemade explosive device that destroyed two cars, police alleged.

Police facts tendered to Port Macquarie Local Court at a bail hearing last week alleged that the 23-year-old made a bomb which he planted near a fuel tank on the man's car and which was triggered when the man drove off.

Fing, formerly of Livingstone Street, Belmont, appeared yesterday in Newcastle Local Court by audio-visual link from jail.

The charges against him, of maliciously destroying or damaging property with intent to endanger life and maliciously damaging property by fire or explosives, were adjourned until next Wednesday to allow a brief of evidence to be served.

Fing was charged last week in jail, just a day shy of his release on parole for a separate criminal offence. He has not entered pleas.

A police statement before the court said that about 9.10am on June 1 last year, the alleged victim left his vehicle in the Belmont McDonald's car park to attend court.

He returned about 12.15pm and as he reversed the car out of the park, heard a spark and saw a puff of smoke.

He turned the car off and heard a loud boom. He saw a flame rising from under the car.

After alerting McDonald's staff, he returned to find his car and a car parked next to it engulfed in flames. Both cars were destroyed.

A police investigation found that a homemade explosive device had been put near the fuel tank.

When police interviewed the victim he said he had been harassed by Fing and his father during a brief relationship with Fing's former girlfriend in March and April last year.

He said he was sent a number of texts, allegedly from Fing, which contained messages such as: "Unless you like car bombs and drive-bys, stay away from [the woman]."

A few days after the bombing the victim received a text message which said the next one would be a lot bigger, the statement alleged.
