A COUNTRY pharmacist who dispensed his own homemade ulcer lotion to a woman who suffered a nearly fatal allergic reaction, has been deregistered.

Echuca Square Pharmacy owner Robert Wesley Symons recommended his homemade "Magic Mouth Ulcer Gel" to the woman, Debbie Weyrich, when filling a doctor's prescription for her.

He failed to check if she was allergic to penicillin, one of the ingredients in his gel concoction.

Within minutes of her using it at her home in Mathoura on March 13, Ms Weyrich suffered a severe allergic reaction. Her mouth and face swelled and she experienced profuse sweating and itching, before collapsing.

Her son rushed her to the Deniliquin hospital, where she was given an emergency adrenalin injection for acute anaphylactic shock and possible stroke.

The Pharmacy Board said yesterday that it was in the public interest that Mr Symons be deregistered rather than suspended. -- ANDRA JACKSON
